Job Positions:
Volunteer and Youth Programs Coordinator

Employed by: Executive Director

Reports to: Field & Program Development Director

Supervises: Service learning students, volunteers and interns

 

Summary:

The Volunteer & Youth Program Coordinator is responsible for the design and implementation of the volunteer and youth education programs of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington and the NARAL Pro-Choice Washington Foundation, including recruitment and outreach so that our network of activists and volunteers is continuously expanding for field, electoral and work in the NARAL office.  This person is responsible for recruiting, training and supervising, all volunteers, interns and service learning students for the organization.

 

Duties and Responsibilities:

Planning

  • Attend the Annual Planning Retreat.
  • Write two week, annual and long-term plans for all the programs
  • Attend weekly staff meetings

Maintain a positive volunteer environment

·         Recruit volunteers for a wide variety of organizational projects and events including but not limited to office assistance, IT, fund raising, special events, phone banks, and grassroots legislative advocacy – and oversee these activities where applicable

·         Track volunteer hours and maintain thank you and reward systems

·         Plan and implement volunteer trainings

·         Assist staff in training and working with volunteers

·         Establish and maintain a volunteer leadership program

·         Organize bulk mails and take to post office 

 

Program Management

Responsible for the implementation of the Youth Programs:  teen high school program, campus programs, service learning students and interns.  Recruit, manage and supervise all volunteers and interns working on programs

  • Serve as liaison to all high school, campus and service learning programs to expand participation in these programs
  • Develop trainings, timelines and work-plans
  • Keep interns and volunteers accountable and coordinated with clear steps and assignments
  • Carry out such duties when and if interns and volunteers are unable to meet their goals

Record Keeping

·         Maintain all volunteer records in agency database 

·         Respond to all email, phone, canvass, or petition signers who indicate an interest to volunteer in a timely manner

·         Provide staff with lists of potential volunteers as requested and needed.

 

Other

  • Read and research to be personally informed as to the history, legal status, past and current legislation, general news and trends concerning abortion and all aspects of reproductive health care.
  • Do such other tasks as are appropriate to this position and/or needed by the organization as decided and requested by the executive director.

Qualifications & Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree, relevant work experience may substitute for degree
  • Professional experience in a non-profit agency preferred
  • Proficient use of Microsoft Office Suite and ability to learn new computer programs
  • Experience recruiting, motivating and managing volunteers
  • Ability to work in a fast paced political environment
  • Must be highly organized and able to handle multiple projects
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills
  • Flexible schedule with the ability to work nights and weekends on occasion
  • Use of personal transportation with a valid driver’s license and insurance coverage.
  • Commitment to the protection of the fundamental right to choose a safe and legal abortion and a full range of reproductive choices.

 

Compensation:  Fulltime position, salary based upon experience.  Benefits include generous vacation and sick leave and health, dental & vision insurance.

Internship Positions:
Administrative Assistant Internship

Reports to: Office Administrator 

Available: January 2010 – March 2010 (longer if intern is available)

Hours: Minimum of 10 hours per week, flexible schedule M-F 9am – 5pm.

Compensation: This position is unpaid. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will help secure academic credit if applicable.

 

Summary

The Administrative Assistant Intern will be responsible for efficient maintenance of the NARAL Pro-Choice Washington office space, database management, and other clerical work.  This position will give the intern hands-on experience with the daily business of a small non-profit organization.

 

In order to truly work on behalf of all women, NARAL is also committed to changing the face of reproductive rights activism by confronting issues of movement diversity; therefore NARAL highly encourages women and men of color to apply.

 

Primary Responsibilities

·        Track donations, maintain up to date records

·        Input pledges and payments

·        Make address corrections

·        Household Records and clean up duplicates.

·        Update our sustaining membership file.

Development Events Internship

Reports to: Development Associate

Available: January - March 2010  

Hours: 10 hours per week, flexible schedule M-F 9am – 5pm.

Compensation: This position is unpaid. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will help secure academic credit if applicable.

 

Summary

This intern position will directly assist the development staff with all Chocolate for Choice & Spring event tasks. In order to truly work on behalf of all women, NARAL is also committed to changing the face of reproductive rights activism by confronting issues of movement diversity, therefore NARAL highly suggest women of color to apply.

 

Primary Responsibilities

·        Assist with mailing invitations & promotional materials

·        Assist with phone calls to attendees

·        Assist with tracking of ticket sales & RSVP’s

·        Assist with silent auction display for Chocolate For Choice Event

·        On the day of events, help with set-up, implementation and clean up.

·        Other tasks as necessary.

  • Computer skills including Word and Excel
  • Comfortable with, and willingness to, call strangers and be persistent
  • Ability to work in a fast-paced environment and have a great sense of humor

Grant Writing Internship

Reports to: Executive Director

Available: January through March, longer if available

Hours: 8 to 10 hours per week

Compensation: NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will assist in securing academic credit if applicable.

 

Summary

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is seeking a passionate and dedicated individual to fill the grant writing internship. Grants are an essential part of NARAL’s funding. Therefore NARAL is looking for an experienced grant writer to research, prioritize, and apply for grants from varying private and public foundations and institutions.

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Identify funding needs of our organization
  • Identify possible sources of funding through online research and relevant publications
  • Develop proposals and support necessary for current grants as well as new solicitations
  • Write brief reports on findings
  • Networking with other organizations for fundraising opportunities
  • Assist with the donor base

Qualifications

  • At least a bachelors degree
  • Prior experience with grant writing/fund raising
  • Exceptional computer skills (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Publisher, Outlook)
  • Excellent research and organizational skills
  • Ability to meet deadlines, attention to detail

Students for Choice Campus Organizer

Available: 2009-2010 School Year

Reports to:  Director of Volunteer & Youth Programs

Hours: 5-7 hours per week

Compensation: $100/month stipend

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is the largest statewide grassroots organization dedicated solely to protecting reproductive rights. We work to ensure that Washington’s women have access to the full range of reproductive choices, including healthy childbearing, contraception, and safe, legal, and affordable abortion.

 

Paid Year-Long Internship Available for the 2009-10 School Year

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is looking for responsible, dedicated, resolutely pro-choice students to fill the position of Students For Choice Campus Organizer.  Campus Organizers are essential in educating their fellow students about the importance of reproductive rights.

 

Responsibilities include:

  1. Running a Students For Choice Campus Group.
  2. Participating in at least two community/campus outreach events per month.
  3. Planning and implementing 1-2 campus-based events per school year.
  4. Participating in and recruiting students for NARAL Pro-Choice Washington events and campaigns.
  5. Participating in regular supervisory phone calls with NARAL staff.
  6. Finding a replacement at the end of the internship.
  7. Other duties as they may arise (For example, writing a letter to the editor or working with NARAL Pro-Choice Washington to help advance policy goals).

This internship lasts through the academic year and is done on your college campus. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required. Applicants must be comfortable working independently with regular (but long distance) supervision.

Students for Choice High School Internship

Available: 2009-2010 School Year

Reports to: Director of Volunteer & Youth Programs

Hours: 3-5 hours per week

Compensation: Up to $100/month stipend ($5/hour to offset the costs of bus fare, mileage, and/or parking.)

 

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington's Students for Choice High School Internship program is committed to engaging teens as an active part of the pro-choice movement.  We strive to do this by teaching teens issues related to reproductive health, rights and justice and then offering them opportunities for pro-choice activism.    

 

Intern responsibilities:

 

  • Students for Choice Teen Interns will attend monthly workshops at NARAL where they will learn the basic principles of the pro-choice movement and the skills of community organizing.

  • The students will then be able to apply their learning to practical activities through service in the NARAL Office, at NARAL events, and in their own communities.  Service opportunities will be offered weekly with the expectation that students will engage in at least 4 service activities a month. 

  • In addition, students will be required to recruit peers to attend monthly workshops, participate in service opportunities, and attend NARAL events.

  • Students will be provided with and expected to read news articles relating to the current political landscape and choice issues.

Youth Programs Internship

Available: Immediately- March 2010 (longer if the intern is available)

Reports to: Director of Volunteer & Youth Programs

Hours: 8 - 10 hours per week, flexible scheduling Monday-Thursday between 10:00am and 8:00pm; Fridays between 10:00am and 5:00pm

Compensation: This position is unpaid. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will help secure academic credit if applicable.

 

Summary

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is committed to engaging youth as an active part of the Pro-Choice movement.  We strive to do this by teaching youth issues related to Reproductive Freedom, and then offering opportunities for pro-choice activism.  We have three programs specifically designed to engage youth:  

 

  1. The Teen Internship Program
  2. The Campus Organizing Program
  3. Service Learning collaborations with local high schools, community colleges and universities.  

Primary Responsibilities

  • The intern will assist with all aspects of outreach, supervision and administration of NARAL's youth programs. 
  • Recruit new interns using telephone, on-line, and print recruitment tactics.
  • Help develop organizing materials for youth.
  • Track outreach efforts and their results. 
  • Assist Volunteer Coordinator with other tasks as necessary.

Qualifications

  • Willingness to and comfort calling strangers and being persistent
  • Basic computer skills
  • Outgoing personality and willingness to work with volunteers
  • Strong personal commitment to a woman’s right to choose
