NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is seeking an experienced Field Canvass Director. Canvassing, organizing or management experience required. Responsibilities include managing and training staff, fundraising, educating citizens about current threats to women’s health rights. Excellent communication skills and a strong work ethic is necessary. Full time position, excellent training provided, limited travel required. Salary is $2240/month plus bonus and great benefits package.

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington has launched a field canvass program! We are going door-to-door to talk with people about our work and expand our membership base. With the 2008 elections, sex education advocacy, and increasing access to Plan B emergency contraception, we have a lot to tell our supporters about.

Internship Positions:
"Pro-Choice Pop Star" Event Internship

Available: Starting ASAP through August 25th.

Reports to: Director of Volunteer & Youth Programs

Hours: 8-12 hours per week, flexible schedule M-Th 10:30am – 8pm, F 10:30-3:30pm. At least one evening per week strongly preferred.  Intern will be required to work at the event on August 23rd. 

Compensation: This position is unpaid. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will help secure academic credit if applicable.

 

Summary

Outreach to younger choice supporters is an essential part of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington’s mission.  This summer we will hold our annual event specifically targeted toward young professionals in the Puget Sound area.  The event is titled “Pro-Choice Pop Star” and includes a karaoke contest and comedy show.  The intern will be involved in all aspects of the planning and execution of this event which will take place on Saturday, August 23rd. 

 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Help secure and follow-up with event entertainers and celebrity judges.
  • Help to publicize the event, work with staff to determine creative ways to get the work out.
  • Make outreach phone calls to previous attendees, NARAL volunteers, donors and allies. 
  • Track RSVPs and make follow up phone calls to invitees.
  • Help procure contest prizes.
  • Other tasks as needed. 

Qualifications

  • This event occurs in a bar so the intern must be 21 years of age or older.
  • Excellent verbal communication skills.
  • Willingness to call NARAL supporters and allies on the phone.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office programs.
  • Outgoing personality.
  • Strong personal commitment to a woman’s right to choose

Administrative Assistant Internship

Reports to: Director of Administration 

Available: Spring 2008

Hours: Minimum of 10 hours per week, flexible schedule M-F 9am – 5pm.

Compensation: This position is unpaid. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will help secure academic credit if applicable.

 

Summary

The Administrative Assistant Intern will be responsible for efficient maintenance of the NARAL Pro-Choice Washington office space, database management, and other clerical work.  This position will give the intern hands-on experience with the daily business of a small non-profit organization. In order to truly work on behalf of all women, NARAL is also committed to changing the face of reproductive rights activism by confronting issues of movement diversity, therefore NARAL highly suggest women of Color to apply.

 

Primary Responsibilities

·        Track donations, maintain up to date records

·        Assist with database maintenance, input of pledges, make address corrections, and work with administrative team to improve coding system.

·        Organize and maintain the office and the storerooms in an efficient and functional manner.

·        Assist with ordering office supplies

·        Answer phones and direct calls appropriately

·        Clerical

·        Assist Director of Administration as needed

Auction Development and Marketing Internship

Available: Summer 2008 

Reports to: Development Associate

Hours: Minimum of 10 hours per week, flexible schedule M-F 9am – 5pm.

Summary:

Intern position will directly assist Auction Coordinator & Development Associate with all development and marketing activities for our Fall 2008 auction. 

 

In order to truly work on behalf of all women, NARAL is also committed to changing the face of reproductive rights activism by confronting issues of movement diversity; therefore NARAL highly encourages women of color to apply.

 

Primary Responsibilities:

·        Sell ads in auction catalogue

·        Track progress of ad sales

·        Ensure we meet goals and deadlines for catalog printing

Bellingham Run/Walk Internship

Summary: NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is committed to protecting, as a fundamental freedom, every woman's right to make personal decisions regarding the full range of reproductive choices, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.  In order to truly work on behalf of all women, NARAL is also committed to changing the face of reproductive rights activism by confronting issues of movement diversity.   Our goal is to be intentional in opening relationships of mutual exchange, where NARAL can teach the skills of community organizing and legislative advocacy while we learn from the voices, experiences and priorities of women of color. 

 

Responsibilities:

The Run/Walk Intern will work approximately 10 hours per week and will assist with all aspects of planning and implementing our annual Run/Walk at Lake Padden Rotary Shelter on Saturday, August 23rd.

  • Help manage event registration
  • Solicit donations for food, water, door prizes
  • Publicize the Run/Walk via fliers, emails, postcards, phone calls and on community calendars
  • Research cost for event equipment
  • Help brainstorm and secure speakers for the rally
  • Help with all logistics for run/walk including set up and take down

Campus Organizer: 2008-09 School Year: PAID!

We work to ensure that Washington’s women have access to the full range of reproductive choices, including healthy childbearing, contraception, and safe, legal, and affordable abortion.

 

Paid Year-Long Internship Available for the 2008-09 School Year

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is looking for responsible, dedicated, resolutely pro-choice students to fill the position of Students For Choice Campus Organizer.

Campus Organizer’s are essential in educating their fellow students about the importance of reproductive rights.

 

Responsibilities include:

  1. Running a Students For Choice Campus Group.
  2. Participating in at least two community/campus outreach events per month.
  3. Planning and implementing 1-2 campus-based events per school year.
  4. Participating in and recruiting students for NARAL Pro-Choice Washington events and campaigns.
  5. Participating in regular supervisory phone calls with NARAL staff.
  6. Finding a replacement at the end of the internship.
  7. Other duties as they may arise (For example, writing a letter to the editor or working with NARAL Pro-Choice Washington to help advance policy goals).

This internship last through the academic year and is done on your college campus. Strong communication and interpersonal skills are required. Applicants must be comfortable working independently with regular (but long distance) supervision.

 

Internships with NARAL Pro-Choice Washington let you build your resume while gaining valuable experience. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will work with your school to ensure academic credit where available.

NARAL offers a monthly stipend of $100.

GOTV (Get Out The Vote) Intern

Available: Late June/early July 2008.  The ideal candidate will be available through the November 4th election.  However, candidates available until September will also be considered. 

Reports to: Director of Volunteer & Youth Programs

Hours: 8-12 hours per week.  Flexible scheduling available, however evening hours (5:00-8:00pm) preferred.  Must be available at least two evenings per week.

Compensation: This position is unpaid. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will help secure academic credit if applicable.

 

Summary: The GOTV Intern will assist with all activities related to the planning and implementation of our GOTV phone banks

 

Responsibilities:

§  Make volunteer recruitment calls.

§  Schedule volunteers shifts.

§  Make volunteer reminder calls.

§  Orient and supervise GOTV volunteers.

§  Help prepare materials for phone banks.

§  Help publicize phone banks through flyers, community calendars in newspapers, allied organizations

§  Assist Director of Volunteer & Youth programs with other GOTV/election related duties as needed.

Students for Choice High School Internship: 2008-09 School Year: PAID!

Students for Choice High School Internship

Available: 2008-09 School Year

Reports to: Volunteer Coordinator

Hours: 3-5 hours per week

Compensation: $5/hour stipend

 

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington's Students for Choice High School Internship program is committed to engaging teens as an active part of the Pro-Choice movement.  We strive to do this by teaching teens issues related to Reproductive Freedom, and then offering them opportunities for pro-choice activism.    

 

Intern responsibilities:

-Students for Choice Teen Interns will attend monthly workshops at NARAL where they will learn the basic principles of the Pro-Choice movement and the skills of community organizing.

 

-The students will then be able to apply their learning to practical activities through service in the NARAL Office, at NARAL events, and in their own communities.  Service opportunities will be offered weekly with the expectation that students will engage in at least 4 service activities a month. 

 

-In addition, students will be required to recruit peers to attend monthly workshops or to participate in service opportunities.

 

-Students will be provided with and expected to read news articles relating to the current political landscape and choice issues.

Summer Tabling Internship: PAID!

Reports to: Field Organizer

Available: Summer 2008

Hours: 20-25 hours/week, evenings and weekends

Supervises: Tabling Volunteers

Compensation: stipend of $500/month

 

Summary:

The tabling intern is responsible for staffing NARAL Pro-Choice Washington’s tabling/canvassing efforts at Western Washington festivals and community events.  The tabling intern is also responsible for recruiting and training volunteers to work at these events.

 

The internship will provide valuable experience in grassroots organizing; it begins immediately and ends August 31.  The internship requires 20-25 hours per week, with most of that time being spent in the evening and on the weekends. The person(s) in this position must have access to a vehicle to transport materials to event sites.

 

Duties & Responsibilities

 

Fieldwork:

·         Staff 10-15 tabling/signature collecting events (festivals, concerts, etc)

·         Collect the number of signatures set as the event’s goal

·         Proactively approach strangers to sign petitions and train volunteers to do the same

·         Recruit volunteers on the phone.

·         Set up and take down booth at fairs

·         Oversee supplies

 

Record Keeping:

·          Be responsible for inventory of goods and tracking donations collected

·         Maintain detailed and accurate records for each fair

·         Track number of signatures at each event

 

Volunteer Management:

·         Assist in large scale volunteer training

·         Recruit, train, and supervise volunteers at events

·         Recruit, follow up with, and thank volunteers for each event

 

Other Duties:

·         Report to Field Organizer each evening about day’s activities

·         Help represent NARAL as a positive, progressive organization

 

Experience

·         Previous tabling experience a plus

·         Six months to a year of work in a non-profit or women’s organization highly desirable

 


Technological

·          Ability to manage Outlook email system and Microsoft Word and Excel

·          Intermediate database skills desired

 

Other Skills

·          Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced, sometimes stressful environment

·          Good oral and written communication skills

·          Able to maintain stable schedule

·          Must have valid driver’s license and personal transportation

·          Must be outgoing and assertive

·          Weekend, evening, and holiday work required

·          Must be detail oriented/organized

·          Commitment to the protection of the fundamental right to choose a safe and legal  abortion and a full range of reproductive choices
