Guidelines for Sexual Health Information and Disease Prevention
In January 2005, by request of State Legislature, the Office of Superintendent of Public Instruction (OSPI) and the Department of Health (DOH) published a set of guidelines for effective sexual health education. The Guidelines are a comprehensive tool to be used by teachers, parents, and school officials. Our goal is to have each school district in the state adopt these guidelines and ensure that our youth have access to the most accurate, current, comprehensive sex education.

Comprehensive Sex Education
- Gives teens age-appropriate, scientifically and medically accurate information about reproduction and contraception and is an essential component of promoting responsible decisions and preparing teens for being adults.
- Includes complete information on STD/HIV prevention.
- Teaches that abstinence is the only 100% sure way to stay healthy and safe. Gives teens decision making and communication skills.
- According to The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, “programs that promote abstinence and consistent contraceptive use can delay first sex.”
- Over 135 national organizations support comprehensive sex education, including: American Academy of Pediatrics, American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, American Medical Association, American Public Health Association, National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy, National Education Association, National Medical Association, National School Boards Association, and Society for Adolescent Medicine.
