Over 2,000 Washington residents participate in the March for Women's Lives
The 2,700 miles between Seattle and Washington, DC was not enough to keep over 2,000 Washington residents from the hugely successful March for Women's Lives in DC on Sunday, April 25.
Armed with signs and banners, buttons and pins and poignant chants, Washingtonians joined over one million marchers at the capital's National Mall where their message would be heard loud and clear by all: attacks on choice will not be tolerated.
Faces at the March reflected a range of generations, with those between 18 and 25 making up a large percentage of marchers, including hundreds from our state. Over 50 of those young marchers were recipients of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington scholarships, while hundreds more funded their own trips. Many described their decision to march as the result of the wake-up call they felt they were getting from the Bush administration's recent efforts to undermine choice. Their enthusiasm and dedication was inspiring and extremely promising for the future of choice.
Throughout the weekend Washington marchers had opportunities to attend numerous events to gather and socialize, discuss issues and get excited for the March. Feelings of camaraderie around a common goal were described by many as overwhelming and reassuring.
Congressmen Jim Mcdermott and Rick Larsen, as well as Senator Maria Cantwell joined us in representing Washington state, each participating in March events.
Senator Cantwell even marched with her constituents rather than at the head of the March with her fellow honored guests, carrying our banner for the March's entire duration. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington marchers were easy to spot right behind her, wearing bright yellow t-shirts whose design reflected how far they'd travelled.
While enthusiasm from the March was encouraging, marchers were reminded throughout the weekend that the upcoming November election will inevitably have a huge impact on reproductive rights.
We urge everyone to keep that enthusiasm up by getting involved with your local voter activities, by making sure that you and everyone you know are registered to vote, and by spreading the word about the critical nature of this election.
We are thankful for and proud of all who participated in the March for Women's Lives, it was each of you who truly made it a great success. If you would like to share your March story, email it to wanaral@wanaral.org
