W not Welcome in Washington - Washington Voters Support Women

Posted: 08/13/2004

SEATTLE- George W. Bush will headline a private fundraiser in the wealthy Hunts Point area of Medina tonight. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington tells Bush he is not welcome in Washington state.

“Since his first day in office, Bush has waged a war on women both in this country and abroad,” explained Karen Cooper, Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. “The Bush Administration has criminalized safe abortion procedures, stacked the Federal Courts with anti-choice zealots, elevated the legal status of an embryo and caused severe damage to contraceptive funding and coverage,” concluded Cooper.

“Bush is the most anti-woman and anti-choice President in recent US history,” stated Cooper. “He is not welcome in Washington State. He claims to be raising money to target swing states, but money can’t change what Washington voters believe,” she continued. “Bush knows that his anti-choice policies, as well as his anti-environment, anti-civil rights policies are not welcome in our state, which is why he has not held a single public event in our state,” Cooper concluded.

“No amount of money is going to help Bush and his anti-choice cronies, George Nethercutt and Dino Rossi, to win in our state,” Cooper said, “NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will expose their anti-choice views to the voters of our state.”

Since Bush’s last visit to the small town of Hunts Point only a year ago, women’s reproductive rights have been under siege. In August of last year, Bush announced the expansion of his notorious global gag rule, denying State Department funding to any overseas health-care program that provides abortions, counsels about abortion, or provides referrals. In November 2003, Bush became the first President since Roe v. Wade to criminalize safe medical procedures by signing the so-called “partial-birth” abortion ban.

In April 2004, Bush signed the fist federal law recognizing a fetus as a “person” with rights separate from the woman’s. The Food and Drug Administration's (FDA) extraordinary refusal to approve emergency contraception for over-the-counter status in May 2004 further serves as another bitter example of Bush’s politics trumping sound medical and public health considerations.

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is the leading grassroots pro-choice advocacy organization in Washington State, endorsing 100% pro-choice candidates. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington PAC works to elect candidates committed to protecting the full range of reproductive health options, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
