Election Creates Strong Pro-Choice Majority in Washington State Senate
SEATTLE, WA – Pro-choice candidates wrested 6 State Senate seats from anti-choice hands tonight, in major victory for Washington women. “The days of common sense measures that would help prevent unintended pregnancy dying in our State Senate are over”, said Karen Cooper, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington.
NARAL Pro-Choice Washington’s top targeted Senate candidates Chris Marr (D-6); Derek Kilmer (D-26); Eric Oemig (D-45); Claudia Kauffman (D-47) and Rodney Tom (D-48) won tonight. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington PAC made substantial financial contributions to each of those candidates, and also recruited volunteers to make tens of thousands of phone calls to pro-choice voters and to knock on thousands of doors on their behalf. In addition, NARAL endorsed candidate Steve Hobbs (D-44) won.
- NARAL Pro-Choice Washington volunteers did over 32 hours of doorbelling for Derek Kilmer and also made over a thousand get-out-the-vote calls to pro-choice voters in the 26th District. In additional NARAL contacted 9,900 voters in the district with mail pieces urging them to support Kilmer.
- NARAL Pro-Choice Washington volunteers spent 52 hours canvassing for Eric Oemig in the 45th District and also made over a thousand get-out-the-vote calls on his behalf. In addition, NARAL Pro-Choice Washington mailed over 7,900 pro-choice voters in the district urging them to support Oemig.
- NARAL Pro-Choice Washington volunteers completed 20 hours of doorbelling for Claudia Kauffman and made nearly 7,000 get-out-the-vote calls to pro-choice voters in the district. In addition, NARAL contacted 8,481 voters with two pieces of mail supporting Claudia Kauffman and other pro-choice candidates in the district.
- NARAL Pro-Washington volunteers completed over 100 hours of doorbelling in the 48th District and nearly 7,000 get-out-the-vote calls to pro-choice voters in the district. In addition, NARAL contacted 8,831 voters in the 48th District with three pieces mail supporting Rodney Tom and other pro-choice candidates in the district.
“In recent years we have been able to pass pro-active, common sense legislation to improve sex education in the House. However these bills have failed in the Senate. I feel confident that our new Senate will do what’s right for our teens by ensuring that they receive age-appropriate, comprehensive and medically accurate sex education”, Cooper added.
NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is the leading grassroots pro-choice advocacy organization in Washington State. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington endorses 100% pro-choice candidates. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington PAC works to elect candidates committed to protecting the full range of reproductive health options, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
