Plan B decision is all wrong
By BRENDAN WILLIAMS GUEST COLUMNIST Published in the Seattle Post-Intelligencer on Tuesday, November 13, 2007 The Plan B contraceptive blocks pregnancy with a high dose of a common birth control hormone. Last year the Food and Drug Administration approved Plan B as an over-the-counter drug, and acknowledged it cannot cause abortions. However, some conservatives believe the Bush administration -- known for skewing science to support conservative ideology -- was too liberal on Plan B. Perhaps sensing the imminent demise of Roe vs. Wade, it's no longer enough to prevent terminating pregnancy; some conservatives would actually force pregnancy. Once designated the "hippest town in the West" by Time magazine, Olympia is an unlikely culture war battlefront. Yet Kevin Stormans, owner of two Olympia groceries, has incurred an ongoing boycott over refusing to dispense Plan B at his pharmacy. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington and other women's groups persuaded the Washington Pharmacy Board to rule pharmacies must dispense all lawful drugs. The Arizona-based Alliance Defense Fund filed federal suit against the board on Stormans' behalf.
