A Stand-Up Approach to Abortion Rights

Modified: 11/17/2009

The setting for a new television commercial by supporters of abortion rights is an unexpected one: a comedy club.

Cory Kahaney, a comedian from Last Comic Standing, tells the audience about two patients who are told that their insurance will cover a breast reduction and a nose job. But when a third patient asks if insurance will cover an abortion — she is 11 weeks pregnant and has discovered that part of her baby’s brain and skull are missing — she is told no.

The audience falls silent.

“Don’t let Congress ban abortion coverage millions of women already have,” says the tagline in the commercial, from the Center for Reproductive Rights.
