Pro-choice House Members Defeat Underhanded Bid to Restrict Vital Family-Planning Services
Pro-choice House Members Defeat Underhanded Bid to Restrict Vital Family-Planning Services Seattle, WA – NARAL Pro-Choice Washington applauds pro-choice members of Congress for defeating a last-minute amendment from Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) that would have disqualified Planned Parenthood from receiving any Title X family-planning funding. “Representative Pence’s amendment was a cynical anti-choice attempt to deny women access to birth control,” said Karen Cooper, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. “Many women, especially those without insurance or who don’t qualify for Medicaid, rely on Planned Parenthood clinics to provide basic health care, including access to contraception.” “Anti-choice members of Congress again demonstrated their opposition to birth control and other family planning services.” said Cooper. “This dangerous amendment was a reminder of the need to elect more pro-choice leaders.” The Pence amendment would have disqualified Planned Parenthood from participating in the Title X Federal Funding for family planning services. Planned Parenthood operates nearly 50 clinics in Washington State providing much needed health care to Washington women and men.
