Local women file an intervention to stop rogue pharmacists
NARAL Pro-Choice Washington applauds the Northwest Women’s Law Center and others in the effort to defend women’s rights against rogue pharmacists. On July 26th a group of pharmacists filed a lawsuit against the Washington State Pharmacy Board to stop two newly adopted rules (246-869-010 and WAC 246-863-095) which protect women’s access to birth control. In quick response, concerned citizens represented by women’s rights advocacy groups filed a motion to intervene in the suit. “We fully support the young women named in this motion who courageously stood up to protest the claims that pharmacists’ opinion trumps patient safety,” said Karen Cooper, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. “It is extremely disappointing that these rules, adopted unanimously by the Pharmacy Board after due process, are now under legal scrutiny.” “These rules are essential to protect patients’ rights to acquire the legal prescriptions deemed appropriate by their doctor.” Cooper added. “I wish we didn’t need these rules in the first place, but sadly it is pharmacists like the plaintiffs in this lawsuit that make it necessary.” # # #
