President George W. Bush visiting Bellevue on behalf of anti-choice Congressman Reichert
Seattle, WA – This Monday, August 27th, NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will join pro-choice allies outside a fundraiser featuring President Bush, for anti-choice Congressman Dave Reichert. “I wonder why Congressman Reichert would bring such an unpopular president to his district” said Karen Cooper, Executive Director. “While this event will surely raise money for Reichert’s campaign and the Republican Party it also raises considerable doubt about his ability to represent the 8th District. Bush’s appearance only confirms the Congressman’s loyalty to an administration that has prioritized the systematic erosion of women’s reproductive rights,” she said. “Since his first election, Congressman Reichert has built a despicable record on reproductive rights, including his most recent vote that would have prohibited Planned Parenthood from receiving Federal funding,” commented Cooper. “The notion that Reichert would vote to slash funds that provide birth control to low income women is very concerning,” she added. Reichert has also voted against providing healthcare for children in medium-income families, against allowing women in the military to use their own private funds to access abortion care, and he supports Bush’s global gag rule which denies much needed contraceptive aid to overseas health clinics that provide abortion services or advocacy. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington and allies will be holding a rally at 1:30 pm in downtown Bellevue outside of Reichert’s fundraiser. The rally will serve to remind the congressman how displeased his constituents are with his record on women’s issues. “He has pushed his conservative agenda too far and constituents in the 8th District will no longer stand behind a devious congressman who is a rubber stamp for this unpopular, anti-woman president,” Cooper concluded. ###
