NARAL Pro-Choice Washington Stands Up To Patient Harassment

Posted: 09/25/2007

Seattle, WA – Tonight, NARAL Pro-Choice Washington joins with our allies in opposition to the ’40 Days for Life’ campaign. Abortion opponents plan to intimidate and shame women seeking reproductive health services by maintaining a 24-hour anti-choice presence outside of area family planning clinics for the next 40 days.

“40 Days for Life’s tactic are completely illogical,” said Sasha Cousineau, spokesperson for NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. “The organizers seek to stop abortions but they completely fail to discuss proven tactics like condom use and accurate sex education.”

“This campaign claims to be a ‘peaceful’ vigil but what is peaceful about intimidating women who are seeking contraceptive services, STD screening, and annual exams,” she continued. “Tonight we ask the 40-Days for Life organizers to join us in our efforts to reduce unintended pregnancies by helping distribute condoms and promoting results-oriented solutions.”

Washington residents are overwhelmingly pro-choice and will not stand for this kind of harassment at clinic doors,” Cousineau concluded. “Shaming women does nothing to lower the incidence of unintended pregnancy; it only serves to jeopardize women’s health.  Our goal today is to let the community know that women should be proud to be pro-active about their reproductive health, and proud to have resources like Planned Parenthood as part of their community.”
