Burgess Hate Letters for Concerned Women for America Uncovered

Posted: 10/24/2007

Seattle, WAOn Wednesday, Seattle community leaders released the contents of a decade’s worth of hate-filled letters produced by candidate for City Council Tim Burgess and his company, The Domain Group, on behalf of Concerned Women for America.

Included in the two dozen letters produced by Burgess and his company between 1995 and 2005 were accusations that:

  • Radical homosexual activists and their allies plan to turn America’s public school system into full-fledged gay propaganda and recruitment camps
  • Homosexuality and pedophilia are both sexual orientations
  • Emergency contraception is the same as an abortion, which is medically false
  • The NEA (National Education Association) seeks to promote the “homosexual lifestyle” in America’s public schools.

Seattle has no place for this kind of hatred,” said George Bakan, publisher of the Seattle Gay News. “Mr. Burgess is fond of saying that he has been smeared in this campaign, but it is he who has been doing the smearing of people for what they look like, who they love and what they believe. Shame on you, sir.”

Burgess has previously refused to release the contents of the letters or the amount of money he profited from the “eight or nine year relationship with the group,” though IRS records and published reports suggest he profited roughly two million dollars.

“Mr. Burgess preached and profited from hate, pure and simple,” said NARAL Pro-Choice Washington Executive Director, Karen Cooper. “He can try to spin this any way he wants, but he chose to take on this client, he cashed their checks and even personally wrote some of these hurtful and incendiary letters. If he’s pro-choice, that is not what his actions show.”

Cooper continued, “If Burgess is now being truthful when he claims that he is fundamentally opposed to the mission of CWA, then the fact that he accepted their contract and worked to further that mission is no less troubling.  The millions he raised for CWA directly supported their bigoted, hate-filled political agenda.”

Burgess admitted that he was responsible for business development for his company and brought CWA on as a client. “It was a business decision,” Burgess told The Stranger.

An IRS form showed Burgess helped CWA raise $11 million in the 2004 fiscal year alone, and his biography on [now] Merkle Domain’s website proudly states “he has developed record-breaking fundraising campaigns for a wide variety of organizations.”
