Election Results Show Strong Pro-Choice Majority in Washington State

Posted: 11/06/2007

SEATTLE, WA - In a victory for Washington women, Washington's voters have elected pro-choice leaders to local offices far beyond the Seattle City limits.

"There are many victories to celebrate tonight for NARAL Pro-Choice Washington's endorsed candidates," said Karen Cooper, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington.  "Local elected officials, such as city and county council members, play an important role in protecting women's access to reproductive health care."

Based on early returns, NARAL's targeted candidates Bruce Bassett (Mercer Island City Council position 5), Redmond City Councilman Richard Cole (position 5), Brian Sullivan (Snohomish County Council position 2), Mike Cooper (Snohomish County Council position 3), and Ramona Fonseca (Mayor of Granger) all won.  In addition, NARAL-endorsed candidates King County Councilmembers Larry Gossett (position 2), Larry Phillips (position 4), Jane Hague (position 6), and Dow Constantine (position 8); Joshua Schaer (Issaquah City Council position 4); Lauren Walker (Tacoma City Council position 3); and Cindy Poysnick (Puyallup School Board) won their respective races.

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington PAC made financial contributions to many of these candidates, sent out direct mail to NARAL's members and pro- choice voters on their behalf, and organized volunteers to phone bank and door-knock.

"I am encouraged by the pro-choice victories from Seattle to Yakima," Cooper said.  "Today's election is clear evidence of Washington's pro-choice majority.  Furthermore, the election of so many pro-choice candidates is a win for women's health."

NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is the leading grassroots pro-choice advocacy organization in Washington State. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington endorses 100% pro-choice candidates. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington PAC works to elect candidates committed to protecting the full range of reproductive health options, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
