Bush Administration Draft Rule Still Raises Questions About Access to Birth Control
Today the Bush Administration’s proposed Health and Human Services rule on reproductive health care was published. While it does not contain the language directly defining many types of birth control as abortion, as the earlier version did, the intent and possible impact of the proposed rule remains the same. “I am still deeply concerned about the proposed HHS rule as it was published,” said Karen Cooper, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. “The rule does not have any specific language that can assure us that access to birth control will not be negatively affected.” “Considering the Bush Administration’s abysmal record on women’s reproductive health care, I am far from satisfied with this ambiguous proposal,” Cooper added. There is now a 30-day period for public comment. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington will continue to work with allied organizations to oppose this rule.
