NARAL Pro-Choice Washington Responds to Biden V.P. Pick
SEATTLE – Early this morning Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama announced that he has selected Sen. Joe Biden to be his running mate. “Sen. Biden has been a strong advocate for women’s health, and he has been a reliable vote against anti-choice U.S. Supreme Court nominations like Alito, Roberts and Thomas,” said Karen Cooper, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. “I am pleased that Sen. Obama has selected a running mate that so clearly understands the importance of the Supreme Court for women’s rights.” It is likely that the next president will nominate several U.S. Supreme Court justices. As it currently stands, the Court is only one vote away from overturning Roe v. Wade, the case that upholds a woman’s right to choose. “The Obama/Biden ticket is one that will stand up for women. Obama is the clear choice over McCain when it comes to women’s reproductive rights. No matter whom McCain selects to be his vice presidential candidate, it won’t change his abysmal record on choice,” Cooper added. “McCain is committed to nominating anti-choice justices, and his record shows he has consistently opposed access to birth control and funding for family planning.” According to NARAL Pro-Choice America’s Congressional record on choice, Biden’s record is “mixed” on choice. However, on Supreme Court and federal court appointments, protecting patients and doctors against clinic violence, and increasing access to contraception, Biden has stood up for women’s health. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is the leading grassroots pro-choice advocacy organization in Washington State. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington works to protect every woman’s right to access the full range of reproductive health options, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is the state affiliate of NARAL Pro-Choice America. ###
