Presidential Candidate John McCain Selects Anti-Choice Running Mate
SEATTLE – This morning Republican presidential candidate John McCain announced that he has selected Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate. “Not surprisingly, John McCain has selected a vice presidential candidate who shares his virulently anti-choice views,” said Karen Cooper, executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. “During her short political tenure, Gov. Palin has proven herself to be in line with the right-wing of her party when it comes to reproductive rights.” “It is curious that Sen. McCain would select a running mate with so little experience,” Cooper added. “If he thinks he can win over Sen. Clinton’s pro-choice women supporters with this pick, he is mistaken. Pro-choice women will not be fooled by McCain and Palin.” The nomination of Gov. Palin further undermines Sen. McCain’s attempts to portray himself as a maverick. “McCain’s selection of Gov. Palin is just one more instance of his toeing the anti-choice line. From his commitment to overturning Roe v. Wade, to his refusal to support access to birth control, to the naming of Gov. Palin as his running mate, McCain has made crystal clear his opposition to women’s rights and health.” “In stark contrast to the Republican ticket, Sens. Obama and Biden will stand up for women’s health care in the White House,” said Cooper. “For women the choice is clear: Obama/Biden.” NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is the leading grassroots pro-choice advocacy organization in Washington State. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington works to protect every woman’s right to access the full range of reproductive health options, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
