Statement of Lauren B. Simonds, M.S.W., Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington, on the Nomination of Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court
Lauren B. Simonds, M.S.W., executive director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington, issued the following statement on President Obama’s nomination of federal appeals court Judge Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court.
“President Obama has made a historic nomination in his selection of Judge Sotomayor, a jurist with a distinguished legal career. Furthermore, Judge Sotomayor’s record indicates that she has a strong understanding of the ways in which the law affects the lives of everyday Americans,” Simonds said. “We look forward to a full exploration of her views on the right to privacy and the Roe v. Wade Supreme Court decision establishing the right to choose for American women. We will look to the Senate Judiciary Committee to prioritize women’s rights and health in the hearing process.”
NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is mobilizing a network of over 20,000 members who will conduct petition drives, contact their lawmakers, and distribute flyers and information on the significance of the Supreme Court nomination and the need for a justice who respects this country’s long tradition of personal freedom. NARAL members will urge the Senate to investigate the full scope of Judge Sotomayor’s views on reproductive rights.
