Reproductive Parity Act Approved by Washington House
NARAL Pro-Choice Washington thanks the 52 representatives who stood up for women’s health
OLYMPIA – This evening the Washington House stood up for women’s health and passed the Reproductive Parity Act (HB 2330) by a vote of 52-46. This legislation, sponsored by Rep. Eileen Cody (D-34), requires all health insurance policies that cover maternity care to cover abortion care. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington thanks the representatives who voted to protect women’s access to basic reproductive health care coverage. “We applaud the 52 members of the House who recognize that all women, regardless of income, need and deserve access to the full range of reproductive health care options, including abortion,” said Christi Stapleton, Interim Executive Director of NARAL Pro-Choice Washington. “Without this legislation, women have no guarantee that they will have access to health insurance coverage for abortion as Washington implements the federal Affordable Care Act. The Reproductive Parity Act reaffirms Washington’s pro-choice values and ensures that women don’t lose any ground.” “Tonight’s vote moves our state one step closer to protecting all Washington women’s access to truly comprehensive reproductive health care coverage,” Stapleton added. A companion Senate bill, SB 6185, is sponsored by Sen. Steve Hobbs (D-44). NARAL Pro-Choice Washington has mobilized its statewide network of members and activists to call, email, and meet in-person with their legislators in support of the Reproductive Parity Act. The organization will continue to work with coalition partners to educate Washington’s pro-choice majority about this legislation and generate legislator contacts in support of a fair and equitable health care system that includes access to abortion care for all Washington women. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington is the leading grassroots pro-choice advocacy organization in Washington State. NARAL Pro-Choice Washington works to protect every woman’s right to access the full range of reproductive health options, including preventing unintended pregnancy, bearing healthy children, and choosing legal abortion.
