In the 1920's my step-aunt wound up permanently in a wheelchair after her husband insisted she have an illegal abortion.
In the 1960's I went to college in Arizona. Women sought help to terminate unwanted pregnancies by traveling across the border into Mexico. One close friend went to Mexico and unknowingly came back still pregnant. She then married and their child was born severely deformed. It was suggested the deformity was due to the unsuccessful Mexican "abortion." Another dear friend developed an infection following a Mexican abortion and will never have children.
In the 1980’s my husband and I had an unplanned, yet welcomed son. Three years later our marriage was unstable. I chose a legal abortion. My husband was by my side and helped me through the grief process. We have had two more children since then. They were both very wanted, though both unplanned.
I do not want my daughter or my sons to ever have to risk their own or another’s health by having no choice but a Mexican or “back-alley” abortion. I want grandchildren, but I want my grandchildren healthy and by their parents’ choice.
