Stories from the March

Modified: 06/06/2006

Over 2,000 Washington residents participated in the hugely successful March for Women's Lives.

Sara Medlicott - WANARAL Pro-choice Washington High School Intern
"Oh, I do not want to forget a second of it! Not the ache in my feet, not the tiny luna bars, not the woman dressed as a vagina, or the hot pink dance team who turned up "Baby got Back" really loud while passing the religious rally.

I want to remember the way those anti-choice idiots looked at me, so I will never give in and never become apathetic. Yet, I also want to remember the guy who told me he felt sorry for them, because they were just so confused. I even want to remember the sting in the back of my eyes when the lady in the fur-lined jacket looked at my mother so sadly and said,"Don't you love your baby?" and how neither of us could remain disengaged and emotionally detatched and I shouted with a shaking voice, "Yes, she loves me! We are both pro-choice and here together!" I had to hold her arm for a few more blocks before I could regain my courage.

I want to remember when I am an old, old woman that according to Fox, we had 300 thousand and "they" had 1500, yet how CNN said we had over a million and "they" had two hundred. I, as a feminist, and an optimist, prefer to believe the latter.

I will remember how all this weekend, anywhere we went on the subway, we met wonderful, sweet people and strong, beautiful women who were so impressed that we had voyaged from Seattle and hosted a silent auction.

I want to remember everyone and everything! I want to remember all these feminists and all this hope. I want to save our drowning SYPP group and empower our flourishing WANARAL group. My throat hurts, my feet hurt, my nose burns, and I am so happy!"
